Diazha Berry

 Reaching into the tender intersections of demographics, occupations, and self-perception informs the network of my media and themes. Both the military and black female existences offer a range of experiences that press against stereotypes. I explore military culture through its sense of community, artificiality, multiplicity, and individuality. I am rediscovering the boundaries and inclusions of black femininity through themes of fabric, hair-inspired culture, jewelry, and anger. 

Story is the driving force of my work. Combined with acrylic, oil pastel, assemblage, interactive installation, photography, and film, I connect with storytelling through a range of found materials. Underneath these varied textures is the pursuit of stories that belong to minority communities that I am intimately familiar with, exposing and discovering the narrative framework of military experience and black femininity within Western culture.
